The Mourning

General Meaning

The Five of Cups is the tarot’s portrait of grief — honest, unflinching, and necessary. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, a cloaked figure stands before three spilled cups, their head bowed in mourning. Behind them, two cups remain standing — unseen, because their gaze is fixed on what was lost.

This card does not pretend that loss doesn’t hurt. It does. The message is not to dismiss the grief, but to eventually turn around — because what remains has not abandoned you, and the bridge is still there. The Five of Cups honours sorrow while gently pointing toward the possibility of moving through it.

“Grief is love with nowhere to go — until you turn and find the path still lit.”

In Love & Relationships

Heartbreak, a painful ending, or deep disappointment in a relationship. Allow yourself to feel the loss fully — and then, when you are ready, to look at what still remains. Not all was lost.

In Career & Purpose

A professional setback, a project that didn’t succeed, or a loss of something you worked hard toward. Allow yourself to grieve it honestly. But do not neglect the skills and resources that are still intact and waiting to be used.

Spiritually

Mars in Scorpio gives this card an intensity that can be transformative. Grief, when fully felt rather than suppressed, becomes a passage into deeper self-knowledge. The Five of Cups invites you to meet your sorrow with compassion.

Reversed Meaning

Healing and recovery after a period of grief. You are beginning to turn away from what was lost and toward what remains. Forgiveness — of yourself or another — may be an important part of this movement forward.

Advice

You are allowed to grieve. And you are also allowed, whenever you are ready, to turn around.
