What is a Birth Chart?
A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a map of exactly where every planet stood in the zodiac at the moment and place you were born. It is astrology’s most personal document: no one else has your chart.
The sign most people know — where the Sun stood at your birth. It describes your essential self: your vitality, purpose, and the light you’re here to shine. It changes signs roughly every 30 days.
Where the Moon stood at your birth — your emotional nature, instincts, and what you need to feel safe. The Moon changes signs every 2.5 days, which is why birth date alone can sit on a boundary.

How to read your birth chart
Start with the big three — sun, moon, and rising — because together they sketch the outline of a personality: who you are, how you feel, and how you meet the world. Then move through the personal planets: Mercury shows how you think and speak, Venus how you love and what you value, Mars how you act and assert. Jupiter and Saturn describe how you grow and where life asks discipline of you. The outer planets — Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — move so slowly that they color whole generations, which is why their sign placements speak to the times you were born into as much as to you personally.
Why your birth time matters
The rising sign changes every two hours, so an accurate birth time is the difference between a complete birth chart and a partial one. Most birth certificates record the time; a parent’s memory is the next best source. If the time truly cannot be found, your sun, planets, and elemental balance are still fully accurate — only the rising sign and the moon’s exact degree carry uncertainty. Astrologers have worked with untimed charts for centuries (Britannica’s history of astrology traces the practice back over two thousand years), so an unknown birth time is a smaller obstacle than it feels.
