The Moon signs, in plain words

Your emotional side, sign by sign

Not sure of your Moon sign? Find it in your birth chart →

In astrology, a placement is where a planet was when you were born: its sign, and its house. This section explains them one at a time, in everyday words, starting with the Moon. Your Moon sign describes your emotional side: what you need to feel secure, your first reactions, and what helps you calm down.

The basicsWhat is a Moon sign?

Everyone knows their Sun sign, the sign of their birthday. The Moon moves much faster than the Sun: it changes sign every two to three days. So two people born in the same month can share a Sun sign and have very different Moon signs.

The Sun describes what you aim for and how you like to shine. The Moon describes what you need: comfort, safety, closeness or freedom. When your Sun and your Moon are in very different signs, you may feel that people see one side of you while you live another. Your Moon sign often explains that gap.

Your MoonHow to find your Moon sign

You need your date of birth, and ideally your time and place of birth. The date is often enough. The time matters when the Moon changed sign on the day you were born. The SolsTarot birth chart works it out for you, together with your Sun and your rising sign.

Questions about Moon signs

What is a Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes your emotional side: your needs, your first reactions and what comforts you.

Why is my Moon sign different from my Sun sign?

Because the Moon moves about thirteen times faster than the Sun. The Sun stays about a month in each sign, the Moon only two to three days. Most people have their Moon in a different sign from their Sun.

Do I need my birth time to know my Moon sign?

Often not. The date is enough on most days. On a day when the Moon changed sign, your time of birth decides which of the two signs is yours.
