The Basics

02

The Lunar Cycle

The Moon completes one full orbit around Earth approximately every 29.5 days — a period called the synodic month.

The Moon does not produce its own light. What we see is sunlight reflected off its surface. As the Moon orbits Earth, the angle between the Sun, Earth, and Moon continuously changes — and it is this changing angle that creates the phases we observe.

At New Moon, the Moon is between Earth and the Sun. No reflected light reaches us. As the Moon moves, we begin to see a crescent, then a quarter, then a gibbous shape, until the Moon is fully illuminated — the Full Moon. Then the cycle reverses, waning back to darkness.

This 29.5-day cycle has governed timekeeping, agriculture, tides, and spiritual practice for tens of thousands of years. In astrology, each phase carries a distinct energetic quality that mirrors the natural rhythm of creation, culmination, and release.

The Two Tides

05

Waxing & Waning

The Moon’s cycle divides into two great tides — the waxing arc of growth, and the waning arc of release.

Waxing — Building
  • Set intentions and plant seeds of desire
  • Begin new projects with energy and momentum
  • Attract — relationships, opportunities, abundance
  • Take bold action as the energy crescendos
  • Charge crystals and create vision boards
  • Expand your social circle and make connections
  • Speak affirmations and cast abundance spells
Waning — Releasing
  • Release what no longer serves your highest good
  • Complete unfinished projects and close open loops
  • Banish — bad habits, toxic patterns, limiting beliefs
  • Cleanse and purify your home and energy field
  • Rest, recuperate, and restore your vitality
  • Forgive yourself and others with intention
  • Reflect on what you have learned this cycle

Myths vs. Truth

Myth
The full moon makes people go crazy or act irrationally.
Truth
The full moon intensifies emotions and surfaces what is already present — not external madness. The amplification is real, but it is yours to work with.
Myth
You should only do rituals on the exact date of the full or new moon.
Truth
The energy of each phase lingers 2–3 days around the exact moment. Flexibility serves your practice far better than rigid timing.
Myth
The dark of the moon is bad luck or negative energy.
Truth
The dark moon is sacred rest and deep intuition. The most powerful time for shadow work and releasing what has outlived its purpose. Darkness is fertile ground.
Myth
The full moon always appears at night.
Truth
The exact moment of a full moon may fall during daytime in your timezone. What matters is the 24-hour window around the exact lunation.
