Full Moon Beauty Ritual

A slow evening to release what the month has left on your skin and in your head, and to let a little glow back in.

☾ Full moon⏳ 30 to 40 minutes✦ Release & glow

The full moon is the month’s exhale. Whatever you set in motion at the new moon has grown as far as it will grow; now the light is at its brightest and the natural gesture is to let go: of tension, of the week, of the layer of city on your face. This ritual takes that idea literally. It is part skincare, part small ceremony, and it works with whatever you already have on the shelf. The botanicals I use are listed at the end, but nothing here depends on buying them.

What you need

  • A candle you love (I light a Feu&Co wood-wick candle; any candle works)
  • A soft cloth and warm water
  • A botanical face oil or serum (or the alternatives below)
  • A mirror you can sit in front of
  • Your tarot deck, or our free Daily Draw
  • Twenty quiet minutes, phone in another room

The ritual

Five steps, one slow evening

Do them in order the first time. After that, keep the ones that feel like yours.

I

5 minutes · Set the room

Light the candle, dim everything else

Turn off the overhead light. Light your candle and put it where you can see the flame in the mirror. If you use a wood wick, wait for the first crackle: it is the signal that the ritual has started and the day has ended. Open a window for a minute if you can, even in winter, so the room feels new.

If you like scent, this is the moment for a drop of rose or frankincense on the wrists, or a stick of palo santo passed once around the room. Choose one scent, not three. A full-moon night wants clarity.

“The month is complete. I can put it down now.”

II

5 minutes · Gentle cleansing

Warm cloth, slow hands

Run the cloth under water as warm as you like, wring it out, and hold it against your face with both hands for three long breaths. Feel the warmth reach your jaw and your temples. Then wipe slowly, from the centre outward: forehead, nose, cheeks, chin. No scrubbing. The point is not to attack anything; it is to take the day off your face the way you take off a coat.

If you cleanse with oil, press a few drops between your palms first, smooth it over dry skin, then remove it with the warm cloth. It leaves the skin feeling soft and comfortable, and it turns a chore into a minute of touch.

III

10 minutes · Botanical face massage

Oil, warmth, and the slowest strokes you can manage

Warm three or four drops of your face oil or serum between your palms until they are almost body temperature, then press your hands flat against your cheeks and hold. Breathe. Now move, always slowly, always outward and upward: from the centre of the chin along the jaw to the ears; from the corners of the nose under the cheekbones to the temples; from the middle of the forehead out to the hairline. Finish with light circles at the temples and a few gentle presses along the brows.

Ten minutes sounds long. It is exactly long enough for your shoulders to come down. If you own a gua sha stone or a jade roller, use it here, with plenty of oil so it glides, but hands alone are perfect.

Rose is the classic full-moon scent for this step: warm, generous, unmistakably heart-centred.

IV

5 minutes · The mirror moment

Say what you are releasing, out loud

Sit in front of the mirror with the candle behind you. Look at yourself the way you would look at a friend who has had a long month: with patience. Then name, out loud or on paper, three things you are ready to release. They can be small (“the argument on Tuesday”) or large (“the idea that I have to earn rest”). The full moon does not need you to be poetic. It needs you to be honest.

When you are done, say one kind sentence to the person in the mirror. If that feels strange, start with “thank you”. It gets easier every month.

V

5 minutes · Draw a card

One card for the full moon

Shuffle while you hold the question “what am I ready to let go of?” and draw a single card. Do not read it as a verdict; read it as a mirror, like the one you just sat in front of. A Cups card speaks of feelings ready to move; a Swords card of a thought that has run its course; Pentacles of habits and routines; Wands of energy that wants a new direction. The Major Arcana names the bigger chapter closing.

Write the card in your journal next to your three releases. At the next full moon, read the page again before you begin. That is how a ritual becomes a practice.

Their signature oil, and the one I reach for at the cloth stage: a few drops, warm water, one slow wipe. It smells like sun on citrus peel and leaves the skin feeling soft and comfortable.

Rose in its softest form, for the massage step. Warmed between the palms it glides for the full ten minutes, and the scent is exactly the full-moon mood: warm, generous, heart-centred.

On a smaller budget

The ritual asks for an oil that glides and a cloth that is warm, nothing more. A small bottle of organic rosehip or jojoba face oil does the massage step beautifully, and a rose quartz gua sha is a lovely, inexpensive addition if you enjoy the slow strokes.

Questions

Full moon, asked and answered

Does it have to be the exact night of the full moon?

No. The night before and the night after carry the same feeling. Check tonight’s phase on our Moon Phase page and pick the evening that is actually free. A ritual you do is worth more than a perfect one you skip.

Can I do it in the morning?

You can, but the release step lands better at night, when the day is already behind you. If mornings are your only quiet time, keep the cleansing and the card, and save the mirror moment for bedtime.

Which crystal goes with this ritual?

Rose quartz for the heart, moonstone for the moon itself. Set one beside the candle, or in the windowsill to catch the light. Our rose quartz and moonstone guides explain both.

What if I draw a “difficult” card?

Then the moon has named exactly what you are releasing. The Tower, Death, the Ten of Swords: at a full moon they read as endings that make room, not as warnings. Write the card down and be gentle with yourself for the rest of the evening.
