Three of Cups
“Find the people who raise their cup when you raise yours.”
General Meaning
The Three of Cups is pure, unguarded joy — the card of celebration, female friendship, and the abundance that comes from community. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, three women dance in a circle raising their cups to the sky, surrounded by fruits and flowers.
It is one of the most unambiguously happy cards in the Minor Arcana. It speaks of gatherings, milestones, creative collaboration among kindred spirits, and the particular magic of sisterhood. There is something here about the joy that multiplies when shared — not halved, but doubled and tripled.
In Love & Relationships
In a love reading, the Three of Cups can indicate a relationship that is celebrated and supported by your community, or the happy announcement of an engagement, pregnancy, or union. It can also suggest that a social gathering will play a role in romantic beginnings.
In Career & Purpose
A successful creative collaboration. A team that genuinely enjoys working together. A project reaching completion worth celebrating. The Three of Cups says: acknowledge how far you have come.
Spiritually
The three figures represent the triple goddess — maiden, mother, crone — and the sacred cycle of life. This card invites you to find your spiritual community, your people, those who dance with you rather than diminish you.
Reversed Meaning
A fracture within a friendship group — gossip, jealousy, or someone excluded from the circle. Alternatively, it can suggest overindulgence, or celebration that feels hollow because something important is being avoided.
Advice
Let yourself be seen in your joy. Not everyone will celebrate with you — but those who do are your people.
