The King of Cups is the emotionally mature master — a figure who has navigated the full depth of human feeling and emerged with wisdom, balance, and grace. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, he sits on a stone throne in the middle of a turbulent sea, holding a cup and a sceptre with absolute calm while the waves rage around him.
He is not unaffected by the storms; he simply is not controlled by them. This is the mark of emotional mastery: to feel fully and act wisely. The King of Cups counsels, mediates, and heals — not by suppressing what is felt, but by choosing how to respond.
