The Queen of Cups is the most emotionally profound figure in the tarot. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, she sits on a throne at the edge of the sea, holding an elaborate closed chalice — the only covered cup in the suit — suggesting that her emotional depths are vast and not entirely accessible even to herself.
She is deeply intuitive, psychically attuned, and capable of profound compassion. She does not analyse emotions — she simply knows them. The Queen of Cups represents mastery of the emotional world through complete surrender to it: not to be swept away, but to be fully at home in the waters.
