New Moon in Libraan intention ritual and a three-card spread

✦

October’s new moon forms in Libra on Saturday, October 10, 2026 (15:50 UTC), wherever you are in the world. Libra asks you to look at both sides of the scale: what you give, and what you receive. Here is how to plant an intention of balance, with a candle, a sheet of paper folded in half and three cards.

At the new moon, the Sun and the Moon meet in the same part of the sky. This time they meet in Libra, at around 17 degrees: the sign of the other, of connection, of fairness and beauty. The Moon’s light disappears for a night, and that is exactly why we plant then: what is sown in the dark has a whole cycle to grow.

Two weeks ago, the Harvest Moon in Aries asked you to take something back for yourself. The new moon in Libra asks the next question: with whom, and at what cost? This is not the moment for big resolutions. It is the moment for one intention, fair and gentle, about one relationship that matters. Check the exact phase each evening on our Moon Phase page.

The cards of this new moon

If one of them comes up in your spread, the moon is speaking very clearly.

⚖

Justice

Libra rules this card

Libra’s own card. It does not judge: it weighs. Under this new moon, it asks you to look at the facts of a relationship without rearranging them, neither in your favour nor against you. What is fair, for everyone, including you.

The Lovers

the heart’s choice, under Venus

Venus rules Libra, and The Lovers is the card of choice. Not only in love: between two paths, two people, two versions of you. If it appears, your intention is a choice you have been postponing for a while.

Two of Cups

an exchange between equals

Two cups facing each other at the same height. It is the exact picture of a balanced relationship: you give, you receive, no one leans more than the other. If this card comes up, the bond you are asking about can heal.

The new moon in Libra ritual

☽

1 · Light one thing

Turn off the overhead light and light a candle. Libra is ruled by Venus, so tonight choose a soft scent rather than a strong one. Any candle you already have is perfect. If you would like one for the occasion: in Canada, I burn the Amber Vanilla by Feu&Co (−10% with code MAUDED15, applied automatically); anywhere else in the world, a vanilla soy candle on Amazon gives the same warm glow.

✦

2 · Fold the page in half

Think of a relationship that is on your mind: a love, a friendship, a parent, a colleague, or your relationship with yourself. Fold a sheet of paper in half. On the left, write what you give in this bond. On the right, what you receive. Do not correct anything. Just notice which side is heavier.

✧

3 · Draw three cards

Shuffle while you think of this bond, then lay three cards from left to right. The first: what weighs too much on one side. The second: what is missing on the other. The third: the small gesture that restores the balance. Read the third one twice; it carries your intention.

☉

4 · Write one intention

At the bottom of the page, write one sentence that starts with “I choose…”, in the present tense, small enough to be a real gesture. For example: “I choose to ask for help before I am exhausted.” or “I choose to say thank you once a day.” One sentence, not a list. Libra loves measure.

✶

5 · Seal it until the full moon

Fold the page around the third card, or write its name on it, and slip it under your candle or by your bed. Leave it there until the Hunter’s Moon in Taurus on October 26. That evening, you will open it and see what your intention has become.

“Libra does not ask you to be perfectly fair. It asks you to stop carrying both sides of the scale at once.”Maude · SolsTarot

A new moon makes no noise. It simply opens a two-week cycle. On October 8, a thread opens in the Circle, our community, for this new moon in Libra: come and leave your intention there, and read the others. And on October 26, at the Hunter’s Moon, come back and unfold your page.

✦ Questions ✦

The new moon in Libra, questions and answers

The new moon is exact on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 15:50 UTC, at 17 degrees Libra. Convert it to your time zone if you like, but it is not essential: intentions are planted in the two days after the new moon, so the evening of October 10, 11 or 12 works beautifully.

Plant an intention of balance, especially in your relationships: a bond to soothe, a boundary to set gently, a decision to finally make, some room for beauty in your everyday life. Libra prefers one fair intention to ten resolutions. The ritual above fits into one evening.

Libra first, then the three other cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer and Capricorn. If your Sun, Moon or Rising sign is in Libra, this new moon feels like a small personal new year. Your birth chart shows which house it falls in, so which area of your life to plant in.

Rose quartz, Venus’s stone, for gentleness in relationships, and lepidolite to calm the mind when a decision keeps going round in circles. Place one near the candle during the ritual.

Yes, and Libra loves that. Each of you does your own page, in silence, about your relationship. Then exchange just one thing: your “I choose…” sentence. Not the lists, only the intention. It is often the gentlest conversation of the autumn.
